The trial of a Jewish settler charged with two murders and a string of other attacks has begun in Jerusalem.
Yaakov Teitel, an American immigrant who lives in the West Bank, faces 14 charges, including two counts of murder and three of attempted murder.
Police called him a "Jewish terrorist" when he was arrested in October. His lawyer says he is mentally disturbed.
He refused to stand before the court or make statements, saying only "the Lord is king," Israeli media reported.
Relatives of Mr Teitel's alleged victims were present in court, Israeli media reported.
"My brother is gone, but Teitel must receive the punishment he deserves. Such a person should remain in prison all his life," Hani Balbisi told Israel News.
Police say Mr Teitel has confessed to killing Mr Balbisi's brother Samir, a Palestinian taxi driver, in 1997.
'Proud'
As he entered a previous court hearing in November, Mr Teitel said he had no regrets.
"It's been a pleasure and an honour to serve my God," he said, "God is proud of what I have done, I have no regrets".
Police say Mr Teitel, a 37-year-old and father of four, has confessed to the 1997 murder of a Palestinian taxi driver in East Jerusalem and a shepherd in the West Bank, which he told them were to avenge suicide bombings in Israel.
The charge sheet says some of the attacks were motivated by Mr Teitel's "hatred and objection" to individuals and groups whose lifestyles and ideology conflicted with his own.
Charges include: Premeditated murder, attempted murder, weapons violations, arson in grave circumstances, incitement to violence and terror and threatening from a motive of hostility against a specific group.
He is also accused of:
* Placing a bomb near a convent west of Jerusalem, wounding a Palestinian, after previously attempting to set fire to the building
* Sending a bomb disguised as a gift for the Jewish holiday of Purim to a family of messianic Jews - Jews who believe in Jesus as a saviour - seriously wounding a 15-year-old boy
* A bomb attack which lightly wounded the left-wing Israeli academic Zeev Sternhell last year
* Placing a bomb in a police station in an attempted attack which police say was aimed at diverting them from providing security for gay pride parades
* Laying an explosive device next to a Palestinian home near the West Bank settlement of Eli
* Putting poisonous antifreeze in three bottles of juice and leaving them near a Palestinian village in the hope of poisoning a passer-by.
He was arrested in Jerusalem after he was found giving out leaflets in the ultra-Orthodox neighbourhood praising an attack on a gay youth club in Tel Aviv in August that killed two people.
A large weapons cache was later found at his home in the West Bank settlement
Mr Teitel's lawyer, Adi Keidar, at the time said his client was "mentally disturbed" and believed he was an "emissary of the Lord" who was instructed to carry out the attacks by God.
He said Mr Teitel had confessed to attacks he did not commit, and therefore his confessions could not be relied on.

A Rabbi has been accused by Israeli officials of burning and cutting toddlers as part of a purification ritual. These stories are ugly and cast a dark shadow on adherents of faith, but one clearly notices how this case is being treated as a lone wolf acting out of a misguided direction. The case is rightly being cast as an aberration and does not impugn all of Judaism as the source of this Rabbi’s criminality. One has to ask though, that well worn question: “what if he were Muslim?”
A self-appointed rabbi accused by Israeli officials of burning and cutting toddlers as part of a purification ritual will be extradited from Brazil, an official said Thursday.
Elior Noam Chen will be picked up Oct. 27 in Brasilia by two Israeli agents, a Brazilian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss the case.
An Israeli embassy official also confirmed that extradition was imminent for Chen.
Chen and several of his followers allegedly used knives, hammers and other instruments to abuse children as young as 3 and 4 years old in the West Bank settlement of Beitar Illit in February and March 2008.
Chen allegedly hit the children in the head and face and burned their hands. One child sustained permanent brain damage and is in a vegetative state, according to Israeli officials.
In Israel, Chen faces charges of child abuse, violence against minors and conspiracy.
Brazilian police arrested Chen in Sao Paulo in June 2008 after a 45-day manhunt. Police have not said how or when he and his family arrived in the South American country.

(CNN) -- A 14-year-old California boy told police he drowned his 4-year-old neighbor on Friday because the child had threatened to tell his mother the older boy had molested him, according to an affidavit made public Wednesday.
Raul Renato Castro has been charged in Fresno County as an adult, with special circumstances including murder during a child molestation, sodomy, kidnapping and murder of a witness to prevent testimony, according to the district attorney's office.
He faces separate felony charges of kidnapping, sodomy and child molestation.
The affidavit, filed by the Fresno County Sheriff's Department, says Castro told investigators he lured the victim, Alex Christopher Mercato, into his apartment "by telling the victim he had something to show him."
Police have said no one else was in the Mendota, California, house at the time.
Castro then talked the boy into entering the bathroom, according to the document. Castro said he then sodomized the toddler, after which "the victim tripped over the carpet, fell, and hit the back of his head on the bathtub," the affidavit says.
"Castro said the victim started crying and told Castro he was going to tell his mother. Castro said he panicked and decided to kill the victim by drowning him in the bathtub.
"Castro turned on the water to the bathtub and filled it up just enough to put the victim's face underwater and drowned him. Castro said he held the victim underwater 2-4 minutes. Castro got into the bathtub with the victim, held him down until the victim died."
"Castro then carried the victim over his left shoulder and put him [in]... the clothes dryer to conceal him."
The incident occurred Friday afternoon, after Mercato's parents discovered that their child, who had been playing outside their house, was missing, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims told reporters Monday.
The parents called police, who searched the neighborhood and nearby parks in Mendota, 33 miles west of Fresno, she said. Soon, the FBI was called in.
On Saturday, authorities resumed the search and found the body stuffed inside the dryer in the apartment next door.
An autopsy determined the victim had drowned.
Under California law, a 14-year-old is not eligible for the death penalty or a sentence of life without the possibility of parole. If found guilty, Castro could receive no more than 32 years to life plus 15 years.

Nassau cops fatally shot a New Hyde Park man who was struggling with an officer, moments after the suspect sexually molested a young woman whom he had abducted, police said.
Police killed Frank Hernandez Thursday night as he struggled with an officer over a gun, police said Friday. Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey called the shooting "completely justified."
Police say Hernandez, whose pants were at his ankles when two officers responding to a 911 call approached him, had what turned out to be a "simulated handgun" in his lap and was still wearing the ski mask he had used to hide his face when he abducted the woman and then sexually assaulted her, police said.
One officer attempted to get Hernandez out of the car when they struggled over both the officer's gun and the fake gun, police said.
The other officer fired several rounds, one striking Hernandez in the wrist and abdomen, the other in his chest, and he was pronounced dead at 11:28 p.m., police said.
"He's really shook up about the whole thing," a source familiar with the investigation said of the officer who shot Hernandez. Mulvey said that officer, who he credited with saving the 22-year-old's life and his own partner's, had been on the job between 4 1/2 and 5 years.
Nassau police said Friday that they are beginning to look into the possibility that Hernandez may be connected to a brutal attack on a teenage girl earlier this week in Great Neck.
The Great Neck assailant also wore a mask. Hernandez is Hispanic and the Great Neck suspect spoke with a Hispanic accent, police said. Police stressed that at this point, they are merely examining parallels between the cases and said Hernandez isn't necessarily a suspect.
In the New Hyde Park incident, Hernandez followed the woman to her Honda sedan after lurking in a Stop & Shop supermarket parking lot, Mulvey said.
Two people outside the supermarket, which is on Hillside Avenue in New Hyde Park, saw Hernandez, witnessed the abduction and called 911 about 10:50 p.m., police said.
The woman had gone to the market to buy ginger ale for an ailing family member, police said.
Hernandez, who lived a few blocks away, drove with the victim in the passenger seat to the back of the store, the witnesses told police. There, he forced her to perform a sex act then drove to a traffic light at Hillside Avenue, where the officers spotted the car and ordered the occupants out.
They took the victim out of the car, but Hernandez refused to get out and told the officer on the driver's side, "Be prepared to die," the source said. Hernandez struggled with the officer, whose gun fell, police said. They then struggled for the officer's gun and Hernandez's fake gun.
The victim was treated and released from a hospital.
A woman who answered the door at Hernandez's home on North Sixth Street said the family was in shock.
"He was the nicest guy in the world," she said.
Hernandez's friend Anthony Marengo, who came to the crime scene Friday morning, was incredulous that Hernandez - a pizza delivery man - was dead.
"He was a kindhearted person who never had a bad word to say about anybody," Marengo said. "He stayed out of trouble most of the time."

A 47-year-old man was convicted of hate crimes by a Queens jury in connection with a daylong crime spree that included robbing a 101-year-old woman using a walker, who he punched in the face several times, the Queens district attorney said.
Jack Rhodes, whose last known address was in East Elmhurst, was convicted of robbery, burglary and assault for the crime spree that included muggings of two other women, one of whom was 85 at the time and also used a walker.
"The defendant's propensity to savagely accost elderly and defenseless women, two of whom need the aid of a walker to get around, was rightly condemned by today's guilty verdict," District Attorney Richard Brown said.
The robberies occurred over several hours on March 4, 2007 in Jamaica. Two of the robberies were caught on building surveillance cameras.
According to prosecutors, Rose Morat, who is now 103, has gotten off the elevator in lobby of her building when Rhodes approached her and offered to open the door. He then repeatedly punched in the left side of the face, causing her to fall. He demanded money and then grabbed her pocketbook and keys before fleeing with a bicycle.
Rhodes faces up to 90 years in prison. He was charged under a state law that allows prosecutors to enhance charges if victims are selected for having a disability or being more than 60 years old.

A teenage Muslim student was killed after he and his friends were attacked by a gang of drunken racist thugs, a court heard yesterday.
Mohammed al-Majed, 16, suffered serious brain injuries when he was punched in the face by George Austin. The blow sent him flying and he hit his head on the road.
Al-Majed, who was days from returning to Qatar after studying English here, was chatting with fellow foreign students outside a kebab shop when a group of young white men and women allegedly began taunting them.
Prosecutor Camden Pratt QC said there was a stark contrast between the two groups because the foreign students were sober and the English youths had been drinking heavily.
Paul Rockett, 21, allegedly took a drunken swing at Mohammed's 17-year-old black friend Peter Henworth after demanding: "Where are you from?"
His attempted punch missed and Peter fled - as one thug yelled: "Come back here, you n****r," the court was told.
Mr Pratt said: "They picked on him because he was black - because of their presumption of his race and by reason of their prejudice.
"The group of white men ran after him but simply could not catch him."
The court heard Mohammed initially hid in the kebab shop in Hastings, East Sussex, with his 16-year-old cousin Abdullah Alnowais and Saudi Arabian student Mojeb Qatani, 14.
But he decided to make a run for it and fled straight into the path of Austin, 22, who was returning to the kebab shop after chasing Peter.
Mr Pratt said: "The Crown says George Austin ran at Mohammed and punched him right in the face.
"It was so hard it knocked 16-year-old Mohammed off his feet and effectively into the air with the force of impact.

"Mohammed went backwards through the air, striking the back of his head on to the road. Some witnesses indicated that he immediately may have begun convulsing."
Austin is alleged to have turned on Abdullah and asked him if he wanted a fight.
Mr Pratt said Mojeb was then attacked by Alex Quinn, 19, who came up from behind and smashed over the head with a bottle.
When police arrived, Austin and Quinn fled while Rockett was arrested for being drunk.
Mohammed, who had regained consciousness, was also initially held in a police van before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
A scan found he had a brain haemorrhage and a fracture to his skull and it was decided to transfer him to King's College Hospital in London for specialist treatment.
Two days later he went into cardiac arrest and died. Mr Pratt said: "That cardiac arrest was a direct result of the head injury that was caused by George Austin's assault."
Rockett and Quinn later told police that Mohammed's friends had started the midnight fracas and claimed the students were a gang who were "trying to turn all the kids into Muslims".
Austin went to Cyprus - later claiming he did not know Mohammed had died and had simply travelled abroad for work.
He was arrested by officers when he flew in to Gatwick Airport in November and has been in custody ever since.
He does not deny punching Mohammed but claims self defence. Mohammed's family have flown in from Qatar for the trial.
Austin of Bermondsey, South London, denies manslaughter.
Rockett, of Etchingham, East Sussex, denies racially aggravated assault. Quinn, of Hastings, denies wounding. The trial continues.

Husband Elwi Okaz is also in a critical condition in hospital, after being injured as he tried to save his wife.
Ms Sherbini had sued her killer after he called her a "terrorist" because of her headscarf.
The case has attracted much attention in Egypt and the Muslim world.
German prosecutors have said the 28-year-old attacker, identified only as Alex W, was driven by a deep hatred of foreigners and Muslims.
'Martyr'
Medics were unable to save Ms Sherbini who was three months pregnant with her second child. Her three-year-old son was with the family in court when she was killed.
Alex W and Ms Sherbini and family were in court for his appeal against a fine of 750 euros ($1,050) for insulting her in 2008, apparently because she was wearing the Muslim headscarf or Hijab.
Newspapers in Egypt have expressed outrage at the case, asking how it was allowed to happen and dubbing Ms Sherbini "the martyr of the Hijab".
Senior Egyptian officials and German diplomatic staff attended the funeral in Alexandria along with hundreds of mourners.
Media reports say Mr Okaz was injured both by the attacker and when a policeman opened fire in the courtroom.

Eight private security guards at the US embassy in Kabul have been sacked over claims that they took part in drunken parties and lewd bullying rituals.
The embassy said the guards, who were photographed in various stages of nudity, had now left Afghanistan.
Embassy officials did not confirm the guards' nationalities or names.
A standards watchdog revealed the scandal this week saying guards had brawled, engaged in sexual bullying and undermined security at the embassy.
The Project on Government Oversight, which sent a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton outlining the allegations, said it was pleased the state department had taken action.
'Deviant' practices
But the watchdog said it had not been informed of the identities of those who were sacked, and expressed concern that the wrong people might have been punished.
"We have been told people are being fired for simply being in the photographs. We do know a number of those were unwilling participants."
The body said in some circumstances supervisors had forced more junior guards to take part in "deviant hazing", referring to humiliating rituals.
It released an e-mail it had received from one staff member describing in detail the alleged behaviour by some guards and supervisors.
The embassy said a team from the state department had arrived in Kabul to lead an investigation into the scandal.
The firm the guards worked for, ArmorGroup North America, has not yet responded to the claims.
But the US embassy said in a statement: "The entire senior management team of ArmorGroup North America in Kabul is being replaced immediately. The embassy security office continues its interviews of every one of the ArmorGroup guards."
American use of private security firms in its conflicts has become highly controversial in recent years.
The Iraqi government banned US firm Blackwater after its security guards killed at least 14 civilians in Baghdad in 2007.
Analysts say the Kabul scandal reveals potentially dangerous security lapses at the embassy, where almost 1,000 staff work - though US officials say they are satisfied that the compound is properly guarded.
It is also being interpreted as another blow to US attempts at winning over the Afghan population.

A standards watchdog revealed the scandal this week saying guards had brawled, engaged in sexual bullying and undermined security at the embassy.
The Project on Government Oversight, which sent a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton outlining the allegations, said it was pleased the state department had taken action.
'Deviant' practices
But the watchdog said it had not been informed of the identities of those who were sacked, and expressed concern that the wrong people might have been punished.
"We have been told people are being fired for simply being in the photographs. We do know a number of those were unwilling participants."
The body said in some circumstances supervisors had forced more junior guards to take part in "deviant hazing", referring to humiliating rituals.
It released an e-mail it had received from one staff member describing in detail the alleged behaviour by some guards and supervisors.
The embassy said a team from the state department had arrived in Kabul to lead an investigation into the scandal.
The firm the guards worked for, ArmorGroup North America, has not yet responded to the claims.
But the US embassy said in a statement: "The entire senior management team of ArmorGroup North America in Kabul is being replaced immediately. The embassy security office continues its interviews of every one of the ArmorGroup guards."
American use of private security firms in its conflicts has become highly controversial in recent years.
The Iraqi government banned US firm Blackwater after its security guards killed at least 14 civilians in Baghdad in 2007.
Analysts say the Kabul scandal reveals potentially dangerous security lapses at the embassy, where almost 1,000 staff work - though US officials say they are satisfied that the compound is properly guarded.
It is also being interpreted as another blow to US attempts at winning over the Afghan population.

Police and social services today under fire after failing to stop two brothers waging a reign of terror which culminated in a depraved attack on young boys.
The sickening behaviour of the pair, aged 10 and 11 at the time, was only brought ot a halt in the wake of the assault which left two other children - aged nine and 11 - fighting for their lives.
As the authorities came under increasing pressure to explain their actions in the lead up to the incident in the former pit village of Edlington, South Yorkshire, it emerged:
Police had been hunting the brothers at the time of the attack
Both were on the child protection register and had been expelled from school
One boy, 11, was subject to a supervision order
The other, 10, was on bail for actual bodily harm and burglary
They had attacked two other youngsters only days earlier
Details of the horrifying case were only revealed after the boys pleaded guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm.
Sheffield Crown Court heard they had denied the more serious charge of attempted murder after the attack in April.

The pair were arrested on April 4 after the nine-year-old boy was found wandering in the former pit village covered in blood and his 11-year-old uncle was discovered unconscious in a nearby wooded ravine.
Police painstakingly pieced together the harrowing details of their ordeal, which has drawn inevitable parallels with the Jamie Bulger case.
The boys said they had been lured to the Brick Ponds area of Edlington by the brothers, who said they wanted to show them animals such as toads and foxes.
But instead of spending a harmless afternoon looking at wildlife, they were subjected to an horrendous ordeal, barely escaping with their lives.
Their attackers robbed them of a mobile phone and £5 in cash before launching a prolonged physical assault.
Both were hit with sticks and bricks, their tormenters dropped a sink on one's head and looped a noose around one child's neck.
The younger boy had a sharp stick rammed into his arm until it went down to the bone. One of his torturers pushed cigarettes into the gaping wound. The other was burned with a cigarette on his eyelids and ear.
Not content with applying extreme physical violence, the sadistic pair also tried to force the boys into performing sex acts on each other.

At one point, the older boy was in such agony he pleaded to be allowed to die. 'Leave me, I can't see,' he told his attackers. 'Leave me to die.'
His young relative, meanwhile, tried to ram a stick down his own throat after he was told to 'go away and kill himself' by one of his tormentors.
The attack only ended when the two defendants said they had to go to meet their stepfather.
But he said one of them added that 'they couldn't go yet because they'd not killed them and they would be able to identify them to police'.
The alarm was finally raised when the younger boy was found stumbling around on waste ground by three girls.
He was in a dishevelled state, traumatised, with blood on his face and a cut on his arm which went down to the bone.

A man living nearby took him into his home. He was later to tell reporters the boy was covered in blood from head to toe.
A short time later another local man Ian Wright found the older boy face-down at the bottom of a wooded ravine. He was unconscious.
The child had a large cut - five inches by two inches - to the back of his head and bruising on his neck. He also had prominent ligature marks on his neck and was naked on the bottom half of his body.
Such was the seriousness of the older boy's injuries that an air ambulance was called and it took more than an hour to stabilise him.
Both boys are now recovering.
Their attackers eventually pleaded guilty to robbing one of the boys of a mobile phone and the other of cash, and admitted two counts of intentionally causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
They were later charged with one count each of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and making a threat to kill in connection with an attack on another 11-year-old boy in Doncaster a week earlier on March 28.

On February 12, 1993 a small boy who was to turn three in March was abducted by 2 10 years old boys not in some outdated n poverty ridden Muslim Nations, it was in a shopping Mall in Liverpool, yes, The Great Britain! The culprits are Jon Venables and Robert Thompson whose religion backgrounds are not emphasis on unlike story related to Muslims of course.
They took little n helpless Jamie for a terror walk, over 2 and a half miles of kicking, beating n torture. Well, they got good exemplary models right? Jamie was constantly crying for his mom all the time..
Finally they stopped at a railway track where they brutally kicked and threw stone at him, rubbed paint in his eyes for crying and inserted batteries into his anus for all the porn U guys promoted and left him to die on the track to pulverized the little helpless body by train to make it look more beautiful.
Sick? Well, watch all the mutilated and bloody bodies of babies and toddlers throughout the wars fought by the western civilized armies n Israel of course and still going on in Afghanistan, Iraq and just ended for the moment, to the poor Palestianians that got the right to die n perish silently of course, while the mighty n wealthy Israelite, some are not even Israelite but Jewish converts from Russia n Africa, the right to live on others' misery.
Babies n toddlers are not 'built' or 'meant' for destruction. Do bad things on them and God's wrath is upon U, sooner or later. The children who did the hideous things to him had got a special treatment of 'Western Civilized Justice' of course. Their justice is always for the culprits but never for the victims. Had it happened in a Muslim Nation, well, luckily it didn't.
But similar brutalities did n will occur anywhere, even sadly in Muslim Nations. Why? Because these stupid and beastly lunatics exist side by side with us all. That is why the harsh n brutal punishments of the Syariah is here to keep safe the helpless n the good while instill terror n fear to the would become culprits. God knows His creation. Their advantages n also their weaknesses. Who are we to question Him?
Don't worry, Jamie is safe now with God. N forever dwells in heaven while the killers, forever dwell in hell. God is just and had forbid Himself of Tyranny. Trust me. Every goodness and all those who perish out of the brutalities of the evil ones will receive His mercy. All those who are evil and love to torment others mercilessly would of course suffer for eternity forever n ever in damnation without the mercy from Allah of course.
